Questionare analysis

QUESTIONS TO ASK AUDIENCE MEMBERS

1. What type of video do you prefer eg. Amplification,

The majority of people said they prefered amplification because it relates to the lyrics and holds the meaing of the music. This hints that people like the video and the music to be closely linked and means we should be aiming to achieve this. A couple of people said they like disjuncture and had the complete opposite view, thinking the video and music should be two different things, allowing a person to enjoy two things rather than one.

2. Do you prefer funny or serious videos? What is your given reason for this answer, Tick one box.

Why?

Most people chose light hearted videos for the fact that in a two minute song, it's easier to make someone laugh than it is to make them care about what's going on on screen. This leads to an easier and more entertaining watch, rather than expecting people to put some emotional investment into the video to care about it if it's serious. Obviously some people chose serious, seeing as it can tell a very powerful story or put across a message.

Entertaining Serious

3. Bowling for soup video ( 1985), what were your first impressions after watching this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K38xNqZvBJI

After watching the video we had the general opinion that it was a silly video, not meant to mean much. Sadly a lot of the people we showed it to didn't 'get it' not realising the pastiches to other music genres and their conventions / stereotypes. nonetheless the people who did understand this thought they did it very well and said it was very entertaining. I think we should aim to do this too, adding in some references that maybe not everyone will ge, but those who do will appreciate them a lot more.

4. Play a 30 seconds clip of what scars song, if you had to guess what genre of band this is what would it be, and why?

Almost everyone said rock / punk, this was perfect as it is just that and we hope to use conventions of those genres to draw upon.

5. What mood/feeling would you say that this song gives off? Tick one of the boxes

This was curious as half the questionees answered happy, while the other half  answered sad. This shows how the music is somewhat ambiguous, those who focused on the lyrics said it was sad while those who focused on the music said it was happy.  I think this highlights the contrast in the song and can allow us to take either path with a serious or light-hearted video.

6. What do you not like within a music video?
This question was left very open and ambiguous for a reason. by keeping it like this it allowed us to get a large range of answers to the point where we got no two answers the same. The most interesting answer we got however was 'sex appeal'. Which was interesting because bowling for soup had it in their video. We took this answer seriously because it is a good point. Using sexual themes as a cheap way to get certain people interested is very over used and gets annoying. Therefore we won't use it in our video.

7. Describe the attire of a typical Geek/thug/emo/jock/stoner character?

Geek-

Thug-

Emo-

Jock-

Stoner-

8. Can you name some of the stereotypes within a rock video.

9. How do you tend to watch music videos? Tick one of the boxes

Funnily enough, no one said 'on television' which we thought  would be the most common answer since mtv and vh1 and other big music channels are about. The most common medium to watch music videos is youtube, because they are available whenever you want, are free and you can watch them over and over.

Online eg Youtube Ipod Music channels Phone
